Comparisons: drawing together information from various sites in the Mailing Information Exchange the following comparisons can be found between the main ways of e-marketing.

The in-depth analysis follows, but here is the general comparison. For more information simply click on the headings:

Blogs: the only detailed survey undertaken compared the cost of hiring one person to spend all day blogging on behalf of the company on its own site and on other sites, with the cost of running Ad Words all the time.  Blogging won hands down in terms of the number of people it sent to the website of the sponsoring company, and at a fraction of the cost.

Ad Words: after the initial research came out on blogs (above) the Creative Direct news group asked if any of its members were making good money out of Ad Words.  One member was - all the others were not.

Email: there is a huge difference in response rates depending on the type of email list you use.  Email can be profitable - but that profit is not guaranteed.

Websites: and just as with blogs, ad words and email, the answer with websites is that there is a way of making them highly profitable, but it is not the way many people tell you.

Direct Mail

Overall our view is:

Ad Words - handle with great caution - for most people they are not profitable, and even when they are using blogs in a widespread manner is much more profitable even when you take into account the cost of hiring one person full time to do it.

Blogs can be enormously helpful to your profit provided you have someone working on this full time, and you don't get carried away and end up getting sued by your competitor.  Most firms get this wrong because they dabble rather than go for blogging in a wholesome manner.

Websites can work brilliantly, but you have to follow the basic rule of covering your sites in text that is informative and well-written and which contains all the key words that people might put in to a search engine.

Direct mail can work brilliantly, but as with all advertising it is the text that counts. Most firms don't bother with professional copywriters when writing direct mail and this is your great opportunity - you can out manoeuvre them by having really brilliant text.
