There is one simple way to generate more hits to a web site, which does not cost you anything - apart perhaps from the cost of getting a decent copywriter to work for you.
The route is to fill your web site with helpful informative text that centres around the topics you cover. In this way when people are searching for your web site through using specific phrases on a search engine there is a chance that your site contains that phrase, and so will be found.
Then get various people using different computers to search for phrases that are known to be on your site. Each person should only search once from their machine to avoid any system analysis that might be set up to detect repeated searching.
The point of this is that although the difference between site rankings at the top of a search engine's listing can be huge, there will be a long tail of entries all of which have only been searched for once or twice. What you are doing here is taking the site up from page 200 to page 3 or 4. Once you are there you will have a chance that people genuinely searching the site will take your site up by selecting your site as one of the sites they want to look at.
But do not think that this simple technique is the key to rising up a search engine. It is not - it is an additional ploy. The key effort you have to make involves putting up a large number of page of web site which contain a lot of relevant and informative text which utilised the phrases people are likely to search on. In the case of this page, such a phrase might be, "How can I get my web site higher up the searching engine rankings?" Have a number of phrases such as that spread throughout the site and you'll be bringing the hits in.
